Maximized windows keep their maximize state and their size. Toggle it with the keyboard shortcut (Super+D by default), or from any application over the session bus: gdbus call --session --dest org.pears.ShowDesktopOnClick --object-path /org/pears/ShowDesktopOnClick --method org.pears.ShowDesktopOnClick.Toggle Clicking the empty desktop works too when Desktop Icons NG is patched with the small patch published in the project repository.
