What is `<GDM_EXCLUDE>` for?
<GDM_EXCLUDE> is a packaging marker used by the Makefile. The project is maintained as a single codebase containing both the EGO-compatible GNOME Shell extension and an optional GDM integration, which is distributed separately for users who want to use that integration. When building the EGO package, the Makefile removes the GDM-specific portions marked with <GDM_EXCLUDE>, so the published extension contains only the EGO-compatible GNOME Shell component. The markers therefore do not affect the extension at runtime; they define the packaging boundary between the two distributions. i will submit the updated clean one next
