Is there documentation for that sort of thing? It seems like the documentation for everything related to changes in GnomeShell internals is absolutely horrendous and lacking.
Not really, AFAICT (patches welcome, of course). You can look at the existing search providers and draw inspiration from them (nautilus, gnome-documents, gnome-boxes, gnome-contacts).
